Huawei expands satellite connectivity to budget devices with new AI breakthrough

Huawei is advancing its mobile satellite communication technology, signaling a major shift toward making global connectivity more accessible across devices.

Richard Yu, Chairman of Huawei’s Consumer Business Group, revealed that the company is preparing to introduce new capabilities in satellite communication, moving beyond its current use in emergency scenarios.

In a recent update, Yu highlighted that traditional mobile networks still cover less than 20% of the world, leaving large gaps in connectivity. Satellite communication, he noted, is helping bridge this gap by enabling network access not only in remote areas but also in urban environments.

The key development is the expansion of satellite features beyond premium devices. Huawei confirmed that mobile satellite communication is now being introduced in budget smartphones and wearables, making it more widely available across its product lineup.

“Mobile satellite communication is now available in budget smartphones and smartwatches, and is gradually becoming a standard feature of smart devices.”

The company also emphasized that satellite connectivity will work alongside terrestrial networks to deliver more reliable coverage, allowing users to send and receive messages anytime, anywhere.

Huawei is also working on a technical breakthrough to improve satellite data transmission. High-orbit satellite communication has traditionally faced challenges due to limited bandwidth and the need for extreme data compression.

To address this, Huawei is using AI-based encoding and decoding technology. For example, a 10-second voice message of 156KB can be compressed to just 0.73KB for transmission. The system extracts essential data during encoding, and then reconstructs the message at the receiving end using AI decoding.

This approach enables faster and more efficient communication over satellite networks, overcoming previous limitations.

With these advancements, Huawei is positioning satellite connectivity as a core feature of future smart devices, aiming to deliver seamless global coverage without dead zones.
