As demand for AI infrastructure grows rapidly, Starcloud has secured $170 million in funding, taking its valuation to $1.1 billion. The company is working on an ambitious plan to build data centers in orbit to reduce pressure on Earth’s power and computing resources.
Starcloud aims to launch 88,000 satellites powered by solar energy, enabling cloud computing directly from space. The idea is to support the rising needs of AI while addressing the limitations of traditional data centers on Earth.
The latest funding will be used to improve satellite technology and prepare for future launches. CEO Philip Johnston said that major technology companies like NVIDIA, Amazon, and Google are already collaborating with the startup.
Last year, Starcloud launched its first satellite equipped with NVIDIA’s H100 AI chip. Another satellite featuring Amazon Web Services technology is scheduled for launch in 10.
The company believes that if costs continue to fall as expected by 2028 or 2029, operating data centers in space could become commercially viable. This could significantly change how cloud computing is delivered in the future.
