DeepSeek faces major outage as chatbot service disrupted for over 7 hours

Users across China experienced a significant disruption after DeepSeek reported its largest outage since the launch of its R1 model in 01/2025. The company’s chatbot service remained unavailable for more than 7 hours on Sunday night, with many users unable to access the platform.

According to Downdetector’s health tracking platform, the issue first surfaced on 03/29. DeepSeek’s status page later confirmed that a fault was detected at around 9:35pm local time.

DeepSeek initially stated that the problem had been resolved within 2 hours. However, follow-up updates showed that performance issues continued through the night. A final fix was implemented the next morning, and by 03/30 at around 9:13am, the company confirmed it was monitoring the system after applying the solution.

The prolonged downtime stands out for DeepSeek, which has maintained nearly 99% uptime since releasing its widely used R1 model earlier this year.

The outage has also sparked speculation about a possible upcoming upgrade. While the company has not confirmed any new release timeline, competitors such as Alibaba Group, ByteDance, and Tencent Holdings have already introduced new AI models and services during the Lunar New Year period.
