A new update aimed at improving driver convenience is in the works, as WhatsApp is reportedly testing a dedicated CarPlay app for iPhone users.
The feature is currently available to select iOS beta testers and introduces a proper app interface for CarPlay. Unlike the earlier setup that relied entirely on Siri for voice commands, users will now be able to view recent chats, select contacts, and start messages or calls directly from their car’s display.
The native CarPlay version focuses on essential features while maintaining safety. It is expected to include both light and dark modes and limits access to full chat conversations to reduce distractions while driving.
One of the key features is a chat list screen that displays recent conversations from the past 20–25 days. This allows users to quickly identify contacts they have interacted with recently. However, full chat history cannot be opened. Instead, users can select a contact to send a message or use a “New Message” option to reach someone not listed. Unread messages are marked with a blue dot for easy identification.
The app also introduces a call history tab where users can view incoming, outgoing, and missed calls along with contact details and timestamps. Calls can be returned directly from this screen. Additionally, a favourites section allows quick access to frequently contacted people, enabling faster messaging or calling without searching.
At present, the feature is limited to beta users through Apple’s TestFlight platform. Since it is still under development, it may include bugs or missing features. A wider rollout is expected once the app is stable.
This update signals WhatsApp’s move towards offering a more structured and user-friendly in-car experience while keeping safety as a priority.
