Apple’s foldable iPhone may mark its biggest design shift yet

A major transformation in smartphone design could be on the horizon as Apple is reportedly preparing to introduce its first foldable iPhone, signalling a significant change from its usual incremental updates.

According to a report, the upcoming device is expected to follow a book-style foldable design, similar to models already seen in the market. Unlike earlier changes introduced with the iPhone 4, iPhone 6, and iPhone X, this new model is said to represent a deeper shift in form factor. The report states that it “is going to be the most significant overhaul in the iPhone’s history.”

The foldable iPhone is expected to deliver a more immersive experience for video, gaming, and productivity. It may also reduce the need for a separate tablet in some cases, offering functionality similar to an iPad.

Reports suggest the device could feature a 7.8-inch main foldable display and a 5.5-inch cover screen. It may include an iPad-like interface with split-screen apps and app sidebars. The phone is likely to run on a 2nm A20 Pro chip along with Apple’s C2 modem.

In terms of hardware, the device is expected to include dual rear and front cameras, along with a Touch ID sensor integrated into the power button. Apple may also introduce a dual-layer glass design to improve durability and reduce stress on the hinge. Features like self-healing glass and a redesigned hinge are expected to minimise crease visibility and improve the folding experience.

Pricing for the foldable iPhone could start at $1,999 (approximately ₹1,84,700) for the 256GB variant in the US, while in China it may be priced at CNY 15,999 (approximately ₹2,14,400). The device could be named iPhone Ultra, although this has not been officially confirmed.

The foldable iPhone is expected to be announced in September, with sales likely starting in October or later. Around the same time, Apple may also launch the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max models. Other variants, including the standard iPhone 18, Air, and 18e, are expected to arrive in spring 2027.
