A new cyber fraud case has emerged where fake recruitment platforms posing as Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation (MahaMetro) are targeting unemployed youth with false job offers.
Authorities have filed a complaint with cyber police after discovering fraudulent websites and social media pages designed to closely mimic the official MahaMetro platform. These fake portals reportedly replicate the organisation’s branding, layout, and content, making them difficult to distinguish from genuine sources.
According to initial findings, the scammers used these platforms to promote attractive job opportunities and lure candidates. Applicants were asked to submit personal details, documents, and in some cases pay processing fees, under the pretext of recruitment. Victims believed they were applying for legitimate roles, while actually being trapped in a cyber scam.
Investigators noted that the use of MahaMetro’s logo and design elements with high accuracy increased the risk of deception, especially among job seekers urgently looking for employment.
MahaMetro has clarified that all official recruitment announcements are published only through its authorised website. It has urged the public to avoid relying on job posts from unknown websites or social media pages without proper verification. Recruitment in cities such as Pune, Nagpur, and Thane is conducted strictly through official channels.
Cyber police have launched a detailed investigation, analysing server data, IP addresses, and digital trails linked to the fake platforms. Officials suspect the involvement of a larger organised network specialising in impersonation-based fraud.
Experts warn that such cases are becoming more frequent, with cybercriminals using advanced social engineering techniques. Prof. Triveni Singh said, “Cyber criminals today are heavily relying on social engineering techniques. They study people’s needs—such as jobs, loans, or government benefits—and design scams accordingly. Through fake websites and communication channels, they build trust and then extract sensitive information or money. Awareness and timely reporting remain the most effective safeguards.”
With job-related frauds on the rise, users are advised to verify website URLs, check domain authenticity, and rely only on official sources before sharing personal information.
The case highlights the growing need for digital awareness as cybercriminals continue to adopt more sophisticated tactics. Investigations are ongoing.
