Apple is planning a major shift in its AI strategy by opening Siri to multiple chatbot providers, a move that could end its exclusive partnership with OpenAI announced at WWDC 2024.
According to a recent report, Apple is working on a new feature called “Extensions” that will allow users to connect Siri with different AI chatbots, including Google’s Gemini, Anthropic’s Claude, OpenAI’s ChatGPT, and others available on the App Store. This feature is expected to roll out with iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS 27, likely to be unveiled at WWDC on June 8.
The update will give users the flexibility to choose their preferred chatbot instead of being limited to a single provider. Users will be able to download a chatbot app, enable it in settings, and route Siri queries through it.
This move reflects Apple’s broader rethink of its AI approach after facing delays and internal challenges in advancing Siri. It signals that the company may no longer rely on a single partner for AI capabilities.
Apple’s earlier deal with OpenAI had sparked strong reactions. Elon Musk had called the integration “an unacceptable security violation” and warned that Apple devices could be banned at Tesla and SpaceX. He even suggested that visitors carrying iPhones might need to store them in Faraday cages.
The OpenAI partnership reportedly did not involve direct payments. Instead, OpenAI gained access to Apple’s large user base, while Apple integrated a ready-to-use chatbot into its ecosystem.
Since then, Apple has expanded its AI strategy. In January 2026, the company entered a multi-year agreement with Google to use Gemini for its next-generation foundation models, reportedly paying around $1 billion annually. Apple also has the ability to adapt Gemini into smaller on-device models, giving it greater control over performance and privacy.
The new multi-AI approach also has a revenue angle. Users may need to subscribe to chatbot services through the App Store, where Apple can take up to 30% commission on transactions.
Even with user choice, Google’s Gemini is expected to remain deeply integrated into Apple Intelligence, handling certain tasks in the background regardless of the selected chatbot.
