Google employees are rapidly adopting a new internal AI tool called “Agent Smith,” designed to automate tasks such as coding, prompting the company to restrict access due to overwhelming usage, according to a recent report.
Agent Smith, inspired by the fictional character from The Matrix, is built on Google’s Antigravity platform. The tool can interact with multiple internal systems and operates asynchronously, allowing employees to assign tasks and monitor progress directly from their phones without needing an active laptop.
While Google already offers AI coding assistants, Agent Smith stands out for its deeper integration. It can access employee profiles and retrieve relevant documents automatically, reducing the need for manual searches. The tool is also integrated into Google’s internal chat platform, making it easily accessible across teams.
The AI agent is already proving valuable as Google accelerates efforts to improve efficiency through AI adoption.
Responding to queries, a Google spokesperson said, “We’re always experimenting with new ways to build agents that solve real-world problems for people and businesses, but we don’t have anything to share right now.”
The growing focus on AI agents was also highlighted by Google co-founder Sergey Brin during a town hall in early March. He reportedly indicated that such agents will play a significant role within the company this year. Brin also hinted at the development of a tool similar to OpenClaw, though it remains unclear whether Agent Smith is that solution or if another product is being developed.
OpenClaw gained attention earlier this year for its ability to perform multi-step tasks by interacting directly with a user’s operating system. The platform and its creator, Peter Steinberger, were later acquired by OpenAI. At the same time, Anthropic has been expanding similar agent-based capabilities within its Claude platform.
Google has been pushing strongly toward internal AI adoption. Last year, CEO Sundar Pichai emphasized the need to integrate AI across workflows to stay competitive. Reports suggest that employees, including those in non-technical roles, are now expected to actively use AI tools.
In some cases, employee performance evaluations are also being linked to how effectively they adopt and use AI in their work.
