In a significant move to strengthen its AI offerings, Google has introduced 2 major updates to its AI-powered live features, improving both accessibility and performance for users worldwide.
The company announced the global expansion of Search Live, enabling users to get real-time answers to their queries through the Gemini assistant. At the same time, Gemini Live, the interactive experience within the Gemini app, has been upgraded and is now powered by the Gemini 3.1 Flash Live AI model.
In a post on X (formerly known as Twitter), Google shared details about the Gemini Live upgrade, which was earlier powered by the Gemini 2.5 model. With the new Gemini 3.1 Flash Live, users can expect faster responses, smarter replies, and fewer awkward pauses. The model also offers 2x the context window and can adjust response length and tone based on the situation.
Google stated that the upgraded model is designed to support developers and enterprises in building voice-first AI agents capable of handling complex tasks at scale. It has shown improved performance over the previous version on benchmarks such as ComplexFuncBench Audio and Audio MultiChallenge, which test multi-step function calling, instruction following, and long-horizon reasoning. All audio generated by the model is watermarked using SynthID. The same AI model also powers Search Live.
Search Live is now being rolled out in more than 200 countries and territories where AI Mode is available. It supports all languages currently offered by Gemini. Users can access the feature through voice and camera by tapping the Live icon under the Search bar on both Android and iOS devices.
Additionally, users can activate Search Live while using Google Lens by selecting the Live option at the bottom of the screen. This enables a real-time, 2-way conversation with the AI assistant, allowing users to ask questions about their surroundings interactively.
