In a major step towards modern battlefield readiness, the Indian Army is integrating dedicated drone units, called ‘Shaurya Squadrons’, into its armoured regiments to enhance combat capabilities.
The new units are designed to support surveillance, precision strikes, electronic warfare and logistics, bringing drone power directly into tank-based operations. The concept draws lessons from recent conflicts, including drone-centric warfare trends seen globally.
The Army recently tested a Shaurya Squadron in a simulated combat environment at the Babina Field Firing Ranges. The exercise was conducted under the White Tiger Division of the Sudarshan Chakra Corps and observed by Southern Army Commander Lt Gen Dhiraj Seth.
During the 13-day drill, the integration of drones with mechanised forces, attack helicopters and coordinated firepower demonstrated improved battlefield awareness and faster response times. The Southern Command said, “Fielded in a realistic battle environment, Shaurya Squadron demonstrated the seamless integration of real-time surveillance assets with mechanised forces, attack helicopters, swarm strikes and coordinated firepower, enhancing battlefield awareness, compressing the sensor-to-shooter cycle and enabling swift, decisive battlefield response.”
According to sources, 5–6 Shaurya Squadrons have been activated so far. However, the concept is still evolving, and further trials are planned before formal approval and large-scale deployment.
The Indian Army currently operates around 63 armoured regiments, with approximately 4500 tanks including T-90S Bhishma, upgraded T-72 M1 ‘Ajeya’ and Arjun MK1/MK1A variants. The addition of drone units is expected to significantly enhance their operational effectiveness.
The move is part of a broader push to institutionalise drone capabilities across the Army. In the infantry, Ashni platoons have been introduced for surveillance and strike roles, while Divyastra batteries in artillery integrate UAV-based targeting with conventional firepower.
