WhatsApp rolls out long-awaited features to reduce clutter and simplify usage

In a major update aimed at improving everyday usability, WhatsApp has introduced a set of features that address some of the most common user frustrations—chat clutter, device switching and managing multiple accounts.

One of the biggest changes is support for multiple accounts on iPhone, a feature Android users have had for years. Users can now switch between work and personal accounts on a single device, with the profile icon indicating the active account.

The update also introduces a more practical way to manage storage. Instead of deleting entire chats to free up space, users can now remove large files directly within a conversation. The “Manage Storage” option highlights videos and high-resolution images, allowing selective cleanup without losing chat history.

Switching phones is also becoming easier. After enabling Android-to-iPhone transfers in 2022, WhatsApp now allows users to move chats from iOS to Android. The feature transfers messages, photos and videos without relying on third-party tools or cloud backups.

Alongside these core updates, the platform is adding smaller enhancements. Emoji inputs will now suggest relevant stickers, making conversations more expressive with minimal effort.

Meta Platforms is also expanding AI-driven features. Users can edit photos before sending them, including removing objects, changing backgrounds or applying styles. A new Writing Help feature can suggest replies based on chat context, with WhatsApp stating that interactions remain private.

These AI features will roll out gradually, while core updates like multi-account support, storage management and cross-platform transfers are expected to reach all users soon.

While these additions improve usability, many of them have existed on competing platforms like Telegram and Signal for years. The update reflects Meta’s effort to retain users and stay competitive, even as some gaps—such as full iPad support and a stronger desktop experience—remain.
