In a significant step towards expanding India’s space capabilities, Gujarat is preparing to enter the fast-growing space sector with new infrastructure plans.
State Science and Technology Minister Arjun Modhwadia announced in the Assembly on Tuesday, March 24, 2026, that the state will establish a satellite manufacturing facility and a launch site near Kodinar in Gir Somnath district.
The Kodinar location has been selected due to its coastal advantage, which supports specific satellite paths. The open sea provides a safe and direct route for launches, making it suitable for specialised missions. This development is expected to strengthen India’s space launch capabilities.
The Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Center led the site selection process and identified the region as ideal for a new spaceport. The upcoming facility is expected to boost India’s ability to launch rockets and meet the increasing demand for satellite deployment.
Under the 2025 Gujarat Space Technology Policy, the state is working towards becoming a major hub for satellite research and innovation. A key part of this plan is the development of a 100-acre “Gujarat Space Park” near Sanand. The park aims to bring together satellite manufacturing and private industry players in one location.
A private firm has committed an investment of ₹500 crore to build what is described as India’s first end-to-end private satellite manufacturing unit. The facility will handle the complete satellite production cycle, including design, assembly, and testing.
This initiative comes at a time when global demand for internet and communication satellites is rising. Experts believe that strengthening domestic manufacturing and launch infrastructure will help India improve its position in the international space sector.
