Amid rising concerns over AI-driven interactions online, Reddit is introducing new steps to clearly identify bots and ensure human presence on its platform.
Reddit co-founder and CEO Steve Huffman said in a post that the company will begin labelling automated accounts and may ask certain users to confirm they are human. He clarified that Reddit does not seek users’ real-world identities.
As part of the update, accounts using approved automation tools will carry a clear “[App]” label. This is meant to help users easily recognise when they are interacting with a non-human account. Developers will also be able to register their apps to receive this label. Reddit had earlier introduced verified profiles for brands, publishers and creators to improve transparency.
The platform may also ask accounts to confirm human presence if they show automated or suspicious behaviour. This includes activity linked to automation tools or unusual usage patterns. These checks will be applied selectively and are not expected to impact most users. However, accounts that fail to confirm they are human could face restrictions. Reddit also clarified that it is not introducing sitewide human or identity verification.
The company stressed that verifying a user is human is different from identifying who they are. Huffman said Reddit does not require or want real-world identities and remains focused on preserving anonymity.
To support this, Reddit will use privacy-focused methods such as passkeys and third-party tools that confirm human presence without linking identity to accounts. In regions where government ID verification is required, systems will be implemented to ensure user identity is not shared with Reddit.
The platform will continue removing bot-driven spam and harmful content. It currently removes an average of 100,000 such accounts daily, often before users see them. Reddit also plans to make it easier for users to report suspected automated accounts.
The overall goal is to help users clearly distinguish between human and non-human interactions on the platform.
