Google partners with SEBI to verify investment apps as fraud risks rise in India

New safety measure targets surge in scam-linked financial apps on digital platforms

Google is introducing a verification label for investment apps in India, in a bid to counter the growing volume of financial scams and improve user confidence in digital marketplaces.

The move follows increased regulatory and public concern over fraudulent schemes that exploit app stores and online channels to target unsuspecting investors. By marking apps that meet its verification standards, Google aims to offer users a clearer signal of credibility before they download or engage with financial services.

The rise in scam-linked applications has become a pressing issue in India’s rapidly expanding digital economy. Fraudsters have been using increasingly sophisticated methods, including cloned apps and misleading promotions, to impersonate legitimate financial institutions and lure users into high-risk or fake investment opportunities.

Google’s verification framework is expected to require developers of investment apps to undergo additional checks, potentially including proof of regulatory compliance and identity validation. The company has been tightening its Play Store policies in India, particularly for financial services, where risks to consumers are higher.

The initiative points to a broader shift in platform responsibility, where technology companies are moving beyond reactive enforcement to embed safeguards directly into product design. Labelling verified apps is one such intervention aimed at preventing harm before it occurs.

However, questions remain around how effective such systems will be in practice. Experts caution that verification mechanisms must be continuously updated to stay ahead of evolving fraud tactics, especially in a landscape where bad actors adapt quickly.

The development also reflects India’s increasing focus on digital trust and consumer protection, as authorities push for stronger oversight of online financial ecosystems. As the market matures, platforms are expected to play a more active role in ensuring safety and transparency.

For users, the introduction of verified labels could become an important tool in navigating investment choices online. For Google, it represents a step towards reinforcing trust while maintaining the openness of its app ecosystem.
