Meta partners with Arm to build next-gen AI CPUs for data centres

In a move aimed at meeting rising AI compute demand, Meta has partnered with Arm to develop a new class of CPUs designed for heavy artificial intelligence workloads.

The collaboration will focus on creating multiple generations of high-performance chipsets for data centres and large-scale AI deployments. These CPUs are not intended for consumer use but will support advanced AI systems and large infrastructure setups.

As part of this partnership, the companies introduced the Arm AGI CPU, the first chipset built specifically for Meta’s data centres. The processor is developed on Arm’s Neoverse platform and is designed to handle parallel, high-performance agentic workloads.

The Arm AGI CPU features a dual chiplet design, with memory and I/O integrated on the same die. It offers memory latency of under 100 nanoseconds, delivers 6GB/s memory speed, and supports a capacity of up to 6TB per chip. The processor can also reach frequencies of up to 3.7GHz.

“We worked alongside Arm to develop the Arm AGI CPU to deploy an efficient compute platform that significantly improves our data centre performance density and supports a multi-generation roadmap for our evolving AI systems,” said Santosh Janardhan.

Meta will act as both co-developer and primary customer for the new chipset. The company stated that the CPU is designed to work alongside its Meta Training and Inference Accelerator (MTIA) silicon. While Meta will use the chip internally, Arm will also make it available to other AI companies.

Meta also plans to release its board and rack designs for the CPU under the Open Compute Project later this year.

Arm’s Neoverse platform already supports major AI and cloud players such as Amazon Web Services Graviton, Google Axion, Microsoft Azure Cobalt, and Nvidia Vera.
