India has taken a significant step in advanced manufacturing with the delivery of the Akasha300 3D printer to ISRO’s Liquid Propulsion Systems Centre (LPSC) in Valiyamala.
The high-temperature, multi-material extrusion system is designed to support cutting-edge research and rapid prototyping, especially in environments where conventional manufacturing methods fall short.
The deployment marks a key milestone in strengthening India’s capabilities in additive manufacturing for space and high-end industrial applications.
At its core, the Akasha300 features a dual-extrusion system capable of handling complex engineering materials at temperatures up to 350°C, with plans to upgrade to 500°C. Its modular extruder design allows integration of additional systems, enabling hybrid manufacturing techniques.
The system also includes a heated bed that can reach 110°C, upgradeable to 150°C, along with an enclosed chamber capable of maintaining temperatures up to 80°C. These features ensure stable and precise printing of high-performance materials.
Built as an industrial-grade research platform, the printer is equipped with a robust motion system and integrated air filtration. This enables engineers and scientists to develop functional components and prototypes with improved speed and accuracy.
The Akasha300 was developed with support from the Space Technology Innovation and Incubation Centre at the Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology (IIST), along with backing from the Kerala Startup Mission.
The collaboration highlights the growing role of startups and academic institutions in advancing India’s space technology ecosystem.
With its deployment at LPSC, the system is expected to contribute to propulsion system development, materials research, and next-generation manufacturing, further strengthening India’s ambitions in space exploration and engineering innovation.
