Apple is expected to refresh its entry-level iPad in the first half of 2026, with a focus on performance upgrades and AI capabilities, according to a report by a well-known journalist.
The upcoming model is likely to align Apple’s most affordable tablet with the rest of its iPad lineup, especially in terms of processing power and software features. The update is expected to follow Apple’s usual approach of gradual hardware improvements rather than major design changes.
In the latest edition of the Power On newsletter, the journalist noted that the device is on track to launch alongside the iOS 26.4 update cycle. This points to a possible release around April, though it could extend into May depending on production timelines.
The key upgrade is expected to be a shift from the A16 chip to the newer A18 chip. This change should deliver improved performance and enable support for Apple Intelligence, which is currently not available on the entry-level iPad.
Apple has already refreshed its higher-end iPads earlier in the year. This update would bring the base model in line with the broader lineup, particularly in terms of AI-driven features. The report also noted that the base iPad was always planned to launch after the iPad Air, and despite potential delays related to supply, inventory, or marketing, the device is still expected to arrive in 2026.
The design of the refreshed iPad is likely to remain unchanged. There is also some speculation that Apple could introduce its own modem and networking hardware in the device.
The current iPad (2025) starts at Rs. 59,900 in India for the 11-inch Wi-Fi model. It is powered by the A16 Bionic chip and features 12MP rear and front cameras with Centre Stage. The device runs on iPadOS 18 and supports Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 5.3, 5G, and 4G LTE on cellular variants. It also includes a fingerprint sensor and a 28.93Wh battery with up to 10 hours of video playback.
