BHIM app introduces biometric authentication for UPI payments up to ₹5,000

As digital payments continue to evolve in India, NPCI BHIM Services Limited has launched biometric authentication for UPI transactions on the BHIM Payments App.

The new feature allows users to approve payments of up to ₹5,000 using fingerprint or facial recognition. It is available on both iOS and Android devices that support biometric capabilities. With this update, users can complete smaller transactions without entering a UPI PIN.

The feature is designed to simplify everyday payments while maintaining security standards within the UPI system. It can be used across multiple use cases, including peer-to-peer transfers, merchant QR payments, and online purchases. For transactions above ₹5,000, PIN authentication will still be required.

According to the company, this move is expected to reduce failed transactions caused by incorrect or forgotten PIN entries. It also aims to improve the overall user experience. Users can enable biometric authentication through the app’s profile settings by activating it for their linked bank account.

NBSL stated that biometric authentication adds an extra layer of security. Fingerprint and facial data are unique to each user and are stored locally on their devices. This reduces risks related to PIN sharing or entry errors.

The update comes at a time when digital payment platforms in India are introducing new features to improve convenience while ensuring user safety.
