Concerns around user data security have emerged after reports suggested that anime streaming platform Crunchyroll may have experienced a significant data breach earlier this month.
According to a cybersecurity newsletter, the alleged breach was carried out through TELUS, an outsourcing partner, leading to the exposure of personally identifiable user information. The incident reportedly took place on March 12, 2026, and was contained within 24 hours.
Initial findings indicate that nearly 100GB of customer analytics data may have been stolen before the breach was controlled. The compromised data could include IP addresses, email addresses, credit card details, and other sensitive information. Reports also suggest that a TELUS employee executed malware on their system, which allowed a threat actor to gain access to Crunchyroll’s internal environment.
While Crunchyroll has not officially confirmed the breach, TELUS Digital acknowledged a security incident on March 12. The company stated, “threat actors claimed to have stolen nearly 1 petabyte of data from the company in a multi-month breach.”
In an earlier statement, TELUS Digital said it is investigating unauthorized access affecting some of its systems. The company added that it took immediate action to contain the issue and strengthen its security to prevent further intrusion.
TELUS Digital also confirmed that additional security measures have been implemented to protect its systems and environment. It stated that impacted customers will be informed as the investigation continues, with customer data protection being a top priority.
The exact scale of the breach and the number of affected users remain unclear, as Crunchyroll has not publicly responded. However, if the reports are accurate, affected users may face risks such as phishing attacks, identity theft, or unauthorized financial transactions.
Users are advised to change their passwords immediately and enable two-factor authentication if available to stay protected.
