SoftBank to build gas-powered mega AI data centre in Ohio

SoftBank is advancing plans to develop one of the world’s largest AI data centre campuses in Ohio, backed by large-scale energy infrastructure and significant global investment.

The proposed facility will have a capacity of 10 GW and will be powered primarily by a 9.2 GW natural gas plant, making it one of the most energy-intensive technology projects globally.

The campus is set to be built on the site of a former uranium enrichment facility in Pike County, Ohio, through a public-private partnership with U.S. utility AEP.

The energy component alone is expected to involve an investment of around $33.3 B as part of a broader U.S.-Japan investment framework.

SoftBank CEO Masayoshi Son has indicated that the overall project could scale significantly, with potential investments reaching up to $500 B, positioning it among the largest infrastructure initiatives in the U.S.

SoftBank data centre will support advanced AI workloads, which require high computing power and continuous energy supply. Initial phases are expected to start at around 800 MW capacity, with full expansion planned over time.

The project also includes $4.2 B in grid and transmission upgrades to support the additional power demand without increasing costs for consumers.

While the initiative is expected to strengthen U.S. AI infrastructure and reduce reliance on external supply chains, it has also raised concerns over its dependence on fossil fuels and potential environmental impact.

The move reflects a broader industry trend, where companies are investing in dedicated energy ecosystems to support the rapid growth of AI-driven technologies.
