xAI deploys engineers as ‘salesmen’ to win enterprise AI deals

Elon Musk’s AI startup xAI is adopting a hands-on approach to win enterprise clients, turning its engineers into customer-facing “salesmen” to compete with rivals OpenAI and Anthropic.

According to a report, xAI is sending engineers directly to client offices to demonstrate capabilities, solve deployment challenges, and close deals. This strategy is already delivering results, with Shift4 Payments planning to phase out OpenAI’s ChatGPT in favour of xAI’s Grok after on-site collaboration, as per CEO Taylor Lauber.

However, Shift4 will continue using Anthropic’s Claude for coding tasks, indicating a hybrid AI approach among enterprises.

The move reflects a broader trend in the AI industry, where companies are relying on technical teams to engage closely with clients. Both OpenAI and Anthropic are also expanding similar efforts, hiring engineers for customer-facing roles. OpenAI is additionally working with private equity firms to build a dedicated “deployment arm” for its technology.

xAI’s strategy also signals a shift in its business model. For much of its early years, the company primarily served internal clients such as Tesla, SpaceX, and government agencies. Now, it is actively expanding into external enterprise markets.

The company is currently engaging with businesses that require customer service solutions. It has already supported automation for SpaceX’s Starlink service and is working with Shift4 to improve customer insights, including tracking customer health and churn risks.

The partnership has evolved into a multi-million-dollar contract, with Shift4 adopting Grok for daily operations and customer sentiment analysis. The platform’s ability to leverage social signals from X (formerly Twitter) has been highlighted as a key differentiator.

“We are going live in 15 countries in the next 3 months, and we couldn’t expand without the AI tools,” Lauber said.

xAI’s push comes after a challenging period that included a merger with SpaceX, internal team changes, and criticism over issues related to Grok. The company is now repositioning itself to capture a larger share of the enterprise AI market.
