Google Messages adds new features to enhance usability and cross-platform messaging

Google is rolling out a fresh set of updates to its Messages app, aimed at improving user experience, safety, and seamless communication across platforms.

Several features are being introduced across both beta and stable versions. A key addition is the Trash folder, which stores deleted chats for up to 30 days before permanent removal, giving users a recovery window.

Another update, “Tap to Draft” for Smart Replies, allows users to place suggested replies into the text field before sending. This enables editing and reduces the chances of accidental messages.

Google is also working on end-to-end encrypted RCS messaging between Android and iPhone, marking a step forward in secure cross-platform communication.

The update also brings user interface enhancements. Read receipts now appear as circular indicators within message bubbles, while a redesigned long-press menu offers a cleaner floating layout with blurred backgrounds and haptic feedback.

Additional features focus on everyday usability. These include real-time location sharing within chats and @mentions in group conversations, helping users communicate more effectively.

On the safety front, Google has introduced Gemini-powered scam detection to identify potential threats. An edit history feature has also been added, allowing users to track message changes.

Overall, these updates highlight Google’s focus on making Messages more competitive by improving functionality, security, and interoperability across devices.
