Centre blocks 300 betting sites as crackdown on online gambling intensifies

In a continued effort to regulate the digital gaming space, the Centre has blocked around 300 illegal online betting and gambling websites and applications, taking the total number of restricted platforms to nearly 4800.

According to sources, the action targeted a wide range of platforms, including sports betting websites, online casinos offering games like slots, roulette, and live dealer tables, as well as betting exchanges that operate as peer-to-peer marketplaces. Authorities also acted against satta and matka networks, along with real-money card and casino gaming apps.

The crackdown follows the implementation of stricter regulations in the online gaming sector. A majority of these platforms, close to 4900, have been blocked since the introduction of the Online Gaming Act last year. The Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Bill, 2025, was passed by Parliament on August 21, 2025, to strengthen oversight in the sector.

While gambling and betting were already restricted under existing laws such as the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, and various state regulations, the online space had remained largely unregulated. The new law aims to address these gaps and bring tighter control over digital betting activities.

The latest action highlights the government’s continued push to curb illegal online gambling and ensure stronger compliance in the rapidly growing digital ecosystem.
