A closer look at the newly launched iPhone 17e reveals key insights into its internal design and repairability. A teardown video by iFixit shows that the device closely resembles its predecessor, the iPhone 16e, with one notable upgrade in the form of a MagSafe assembly.
The teardown begins with the removal of the rear panel, revealing a nearly identical internal layout to the previous model. The MagSafe component stands out as the main difference, and the video highlights that users of the iPhone 16e can add MagSafe by replacing a single part. This offers a practical upgrade path without requiring users to purchase a new device.
The phone continues to use a dual-entry design, allowing access from both the front and back. This setup makes it easier to replace the battery or display independently. The battery has a capacity of 15.556Wh and appears to be the same unit used in the earlier model. Most components are cross-compatible between the two devices, except for the TrueDepth system. While Face ID parts are not interchangeable, the selfie cameras continue to work across both models.
However, some repair challenges remain. The USB Type-C port is difficult to access and requires removing multiple screws and ribbon cables. A small MEMS microphone near the port is at risk of damage during repairs, which affects overall repairability. Despite this, the teardown gives the iPhone 17e a repairability score of 7 out of 10, the same as its predecessor. The device features a 6.1-inch Super Retina XDR display with a 60Hz refresh rate, runs on the A19 chip and includes a 48-megapixel rear camera and a 12-megapixel TrueDepth front camera.
