As concerns grow over the rise of AI-generated content online, Kagi is pushing a different vision of the internet by bringing its “Small Web” initiative to mobile devices. The Palo Alto-based company has launched new apps for iOS and Android, offering users access to a curated collection of non-commercial, human-created websites, including personal blogs, webcomics, and independent videos.
The idea behind the “Small Web” is to revive the spirit of the early internet, which was largely built by individuals before ad-driven platforms and large corporations took over. First introduced in 2023, the initiative aims to make such content easier to discover, especially as AI-generated material becomes more common and harder to distinguish. In March, Kagi expanded the project with mobile apps, browser extensions, and new filtering tools to improve content discovery.
The Small Web platform works similarly to StumbleUpon, randomly showing users a selected site and allowing them to move to the next with a click. With over 30,000 sites indexed, users can now filter content by categories such as blogs, videos, code repositories, and comics. The apps also offer features like viewing popular or recently visited sites, saving favorites, and reading content in a distraction-free mode.
Despite its promise, some users feel the initiative has limitations. Discussions on Hacker News highlight concerns that Kagi only includes sites with active RSS feeds, excluding unique or experimental pages. Others have questioned whether some listed content may still be AI-generated. Still, the company believes a human-curated web remains valuable, especially as it continues its broader effort to position itself as an alternative to Google. Users can also suggest new sites for inclusion through its GitHub page.
