Cyber resilience in critical infrastructure demands shift from assessment to active risk management

In an increasingly digital environment, organizations managing critical national infrastructure are being urged to rethink how they approach cyber risk. Understanding threats is no longer enough. The real challenge lies in prioritizing and managing risks effectively across all levels, from leadership to operations, with the goal of maintaining business continuity during cyber incidents.

Recent events highlight the stakes. Over the Easter weekend this year, Marks and Spencer faced a major cyber attack that disrupted online services for 3 months until late July. The incident led to empty supermarket shelves, limited clothing availability, and an estimated financial loss of £300 million. The disruption showed how a lack of cyber resilience can bring operations to a standstill.

Drawing on 20 years of experience, Tekgem has introduced an updated version of its Unity platform to address these challenges. The platform now includes advanced risk management tools that help organizations identify critical systems, assess vulnerabilities, and track risks in real time. Features like live risk registers, action tracking, and executive dashboards provide visibility into top risks and ongoing mitigation efforts, ensuring accountability across teams.

The shift in focus is from static risk assessments to continuous risk management. Traditional assessments offer only a snapshot, while real-world risks constantly evolve with new systems and threats. The new approach emphasises proactive strategies, such as prioritising risks based on business impact rather than just severity scores. For example, a high-severity vulnerability may pose little risk if the system is not connected, while failure of essential systems like payment or operational tools can halt business entirely.

The updated Unity platform is being rolled out this month for both new and existing users, supported by webinars and demonstrations. It aims to help organizations move from reactive cybersecurity practices to proactive resilience, ensuring they protect what matters most and maintain operations under pressure.
