Major technology companies are introducing artificial intelligence chatbots that can access and analyse personal health data, offering convenience while raising questions about privacy and safety.
Microsoft recently launched Copilot Health, which allows users to link records from multiple health providers with wearable devices such as Apple Watch or Fitbit. The AI chatbot aggregates this information to provide a high-level summary of a user’s health, potential risks, and trends.
Other tech giants are following suit. OpenAI has introduced ChatGPT Health, and Anthropic is rolling out Claude for Healthcare. Amazon has expanded its health AI assistant to provide symptom support, personalised insights, and connections to healthcare providers. These platforms aim to simplify understanding of medical information and enhance patient engagement outside clinical settings.
While companies emphasise that these tools do not replace professional medical advice, experts caution that AI-generated health summaries can be inaccurate, biased, or misleading. Studies indicate that chatbots may under-triage emergencies, misinterpret symptoms, or reflect biases in training data, raising concerns about safety and fairness.
Data privacy is another major issue. Although Microsoft says Copilot Health chats are encrypted and separated from general AI interactions, highly sensitive health information may still be vulnerable. Users must understand how their data is stored and used.
Healthcare professionals recommend treating AI health chatbots as informational tools rather than substitutes for licensed clinicians. While they offer the promise of greater accessibility and convenience, these systems represent a high-stakes intersection of technology, privacy, and personal wellbeing.
As AI continues to expand into healthcare, users and regulators face the challenge of balancing innovation, privacy and safety to ensure that these tools benefit rather than harm users.
