YouTube ad revenue surpasses combined earnings of major media giants

Google’s video platform YouTube is now generating more advertising revenue than several of the world’s largest traditional media companies combined, highlighting the growing influence of online streaming and creator-led content.

According to estimates shared by research firm MoffettNathanson, YouTube generated $40.4 billion in advertising revenue in 2025. This figure surpassed the combined $37.8 billion earned from advertisements by major media companies including The Walt Disney Company, NBCUniversal, Paramount Global, and Warner Bros. Discovery.

While YouTube has seen steady growth over the years, the report indicates that the past year witnessed a significant jump in advertising revenue. This surge helped the platform move ahead of traditional entertainment companies that have historically dominated the global media industry.

Beyond revenue, YouTube is also gaining a strong share of viewership. Data from Nielsen showed that YouTube accounted for 12.5 per cent of television viewing in the United States in January. This share was higher than the combined streaming viewership of Disney, NBCUniversal, Paramount, and Warner Bros Discovery. Netflix followed YouTube, leading among streaming platforms but still trailing the video platform in total TV share.

India remains one of YouTube’s largest markets. Reports suggest the platform had between 491 million and 500 million active users in the country as of early 2026.

One major factor behind YouTube’s strong growth is its creator-driven model. Unlike traditional studios that produce and distribute their own content, the platform depends largely on independent creators who upload videos. Following the pandemic, the number of online creators increased sharply, helping it expand its content ecosystem.

To support creators, Google shares a large portion of advertising revenue. Creators typically receive about 55 per cent of ad earnings from standard videos. This approach encourages more creators to produce content while keeping audiences and advertisers engaged.

Advertising is not the platform’s only income stream. In 2025, YouTube generated nearly $22 billion in subscription revenue from services such as YouTube TV, Premium, Music, and the NFL Sunday Ticket.

Artificial intelligence is expected to further accelerate this shift. YouTube said AI tools are helping creators streamline workflows and produce content more efficiently. As of 2024, around 92 per cent of creators were already using AI tools, and 96 per cent used them to support their creative work.

New video-generation technologies such as Veo, Sora, Seedance, and Kling could further challenge traditional studios. These tools enable users to create high-quality, studio-like videos at a much lower cost, potentially shifting the balance of power in the media industry toward individual creators and digital platforms.
