Abdul-Aziz Garuba takes on an expanded role as Chief Financial Officer at MortgageMarket

Mr. Garuba has been associated with MortgageMarket for more than 2 years and most recently served as Head of Finance and Chief Commercial Officer. In that role, he led the company’s finance function and shaped long-term commercial strategies to support the growth of the venture-backed business. His work focused on building scalable financial frameworks, improving commercial performance, and delivering value to customers and partners within South Africa’s mortgage ecosystem.

Before joining MortgageMarket, Garuba held a senior leadership position at RBC Capital Markets as Director of Finance, Strategy and Business Architecture. In this role, he led cost transformation and process improvement programs across capital markets finance while managing financial planning and analysis, performance reporting, and operational efficiency initiatives for senior leadership across global markets.

Earlier in his career, Garuba held multiple finance leadership roles at Royal Bank of Canada. These included Senior Manager and Manager positions across Wealth Management Finance, Investor and Treasury Services, and Enterprise Decision Support. His responsibilities covered global financial planning, performance management, stress testing models, and strategic financial analysis for large-scale banking operations.

Garuba also worked as Engagement Manager for Finance Transformation at EY, where he led finance transformation programs across sectors including financial services, mining, retail, and technology.

Earlier in his career, he worked as an Auditor at Canada Revenue Agency and began his professional journey as a Financial Analyst at Securities and Exchange Commission Nigeria.

Alongside his corporate work, Garuba is also active in entrepreneurship and community leadership. He is Co-founder of Cribvest and BlackTies, serves as a CFO and Startup Advisor at Nobellum, is a Black Wealth Club Fellow, and hosts the Made To Lead Podcast focused on leadership stories among professionals of African descent. He holds an MBA from Queen’s University.
