Oppo and MediaTek unveil on-device AI innovations at MWC 2026

At the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2026, Oppo and MediaTek revealed new on-device artificial intelligence capabilities designed for upcoming smartphones. The announcement was made during MediaTek’s AI for Life keynote on Wednesday, where both companies highlighted their joint efforts to deliver AI features that work without cloud connectivity.

In a newsroom update, Oppo said the collaboration focuses on developing advanced AI tools that run entirely on the device, powered by MediaTek chipsets. Jason Liao, President of the Oppo Research Institute, said, “On-device Compute is a cornerstone of Oppo’s AI strategy, making AI a perceptible, real-time experience integrated into everyday usage.” The company added that this approach enables low-latency, privacy-focused, and personalised AI experiences.

As part of the partnership, Oppo and MediaTek are enhancing both new and existing AI features on Oppo smartphones. The AI Translate and AI Portrait Glow tools in the Oppo Find X9 series will receive upgrades powered by the MediaTek Dimensity 9500 chipset. The companies claim that performance levels will be comparable to cloud-based AI tools. The improvements will be delivered through the upcoming ColorOS 16 update.

According to the announcement, the upgraded AI Translate feature achieved around 15 percent improvement in accuracy, along with stronger multilingual translation capabilities. The enhanced on-device AI Portrait Glow feature is also said to offer better analysis and reconstruction of scene lighting for improved image results.

In addition, the companies showcased a preview of Omni, a jointly developed on-device AI model. Omni supports multi-modal understanding and can process voice, video, and text inputs to deliver relevant responses. It runs fully on the device without relying on the cloud. However, Oppo has not confirmed when the model will be available or which smartphones will support it first.

Separately, Oppo noted that the Oppo Find X9 Pro was shortlisted for the best smartphone award at the Global Mobile (GLOMO) Awards, organised annually by GSMA, during MWC 2026.
