Astronomers have captured a striking image of a distant spiral galaxy that appears like a rotating cosmic wheel. The image was taken using the Subaru Telescope located at the summit of Maunakea in Hawaiʻi. The galaxy in the image is NGC 941. It lies around 55 million light-years away from Earth and is positioned in the constellation Cetus.
NGC 941 is classified as an intermediate spiral galaxy. This means its structure sits between a barred spiral galaxy and an unbarred spiral galaxy. In barred spiral galaxies, a dense bar-shaped region of stars forms across the center. In unbarred spirals, such a structure is absent. Intermediate spiral galaxies show only partial signs of this central stellar bar.
The new image presents NGC 941 as a bright blue spiral system. Dark dust lanes appear near the galaxy’s center, indicating regions where new stars are forming. These lanes of cosmic dust are key markers of ongoing star formation within the galaxy.
Another interesting detail in the image is the presence of small orange patches scattered around the spiral structure. These objects are not part of NGC 941. Instead, they are distant background galaxies that can be seen through it because the intermediate spiral galaxy itself is relatively faint.
The observation highlights how powerful ground-based telescopes like Subaru can capture detailed images of distant cosmic structures, revealing both galaxy morphology and star-forming activity.
