Fake traffic challan messages trigger new wave of cyber fraud

As more public services move online, cybercriminals are finding new ways to exploit digital platforms. One of the latest tactics involves fake traffic challan messages sent to vehicle owners to trick them into making payments through fraudulent links.

Many people are receiving messages claiming that a traffic challan has been issued against their vehicle. The messages warn that the fine will increase or the vehicle may be seized if payment is not made immediately. To appear genuine, these messages often include vehicle numbers, dates, and fine amounts. This makes them look authentic and pushes recipients to click on the provided link.

In most cases, the link leads to a fake website designed to look like an official government portal. However, these sites are fraudulent. Once redirected, users are asked to enter details such as vehicle number, mobile number, and sometimes OTP or bank information. Many people enter their details in a hurry, which can result in their bank accounts being emptied.

Experts advise vehicle owners to verify any traffic challan information only through official government platforms. Users should check their challan status on the mParivahan app or through the official Parivahan Sewa website. Police or RTO departments do not send payment requests through unknown or suspicious links.

Cybersecurity officials have urged people not to click on unverified links in such messages. If a message about a challan is received, users should first confirm its authenticity by checking the status directly on the official website using their vehicle number.

Authorities also stress that OTPs, bank details, and personal information should never be shared on unknown or unverified websites.

Experts say awareness is the most powerful tool against cyber fraud. As digital services expand, users must stay alert, as even a small mistake can lead to major financial loss.
