In a move aimed at strengthening India’s telecom ecosystem, the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Telecommunication Engineering Centre to collaborate on telecom research, standardisation, and innovation.
An institute spokesperson said on Friday that the agreement is designed to align academic research with national priorities in the telecom and information and communication technology sectors.
The MoU was recently signed by Deputy Director General (Finance & Administration), TEC, Kamal Kr Agarwal, and Associate Dean (Research & Development), IIT Kharagpur, Debdeep Mukhopadhyay. The signing took place in the presence of IIT Kharagpur Director Prof Suman Chakraborty and other senior officials.
Under the agreement, both institutions will work together on developing telecom standards, conducting research, and contributing to next-generation technologies, including 5G and future networks.
TEC serves as India’s national body for telecom standards. It prepares technical standards, specifications, and test procedures for telecom equipment and services. It also represents India at global platforms such as the International Telecommunication Union in its standardisation and radiocommunication sectors.
The collaboration will focus on advanced antenna systems and Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) technologies to support 5G and future wireless networks. The two sides will also work on Passive Optical Network (PON) technologies. This includes standardising network design, improving deployment models, and evaluating performance.
Another key area of cooperation is electromagnetic field (EMF) monitoring and smart Internet of Things (IoT) solutions. This will involve developing monitoring systems and AI-based sensor platforms to enhance safety standards and ensure regulatory compliance.
Chakraborty said the MoU also enables both institutions to explore other emerging telecom areas aligned with national priorities.
The partnership is expected to strengthen India’s presence in global telecom standardisation while promoting research-driven innovation and self-reliance in communication technologies, he added.
