Strengthening its AI capabilities, Google has introduced the second version of its AI image-generation model, Nano Banana. The upgraded model, called Nano Banana 2, is designed to be faster and more efficient than the earlier version.
Technically named Gemini 3.1 Flash Image, the model will now become the default image-generation option in the Gemini app across its Fast, Thinking, and Pro modes. It uses real-time information and images from web search to create high-fidelity visuals that reflect real-world conditions.
Enhanced capabilities
Nano Banana 2 can generate images in multiple aspect ratios and resolutions ranging from 512px to 4K. It retains several high-quality features of its Pro counterpart while delivering results at a faster speed.
The model maintains character consistency for up to 5 characters and ensures fidelity for up to 14 objects in a single workflow. This makes it suitable for storytelling and detailed creative tasks.
Greater user control
With Nano Banana 2, users can submit complex image-generation requests with detailed nuances. The model offers creative control over elements such as aspect ratio and the number of objects in a frame.
It will serve as the default image-generation model across all apps within the Gemini app and in Google’s video editing tool, Flow.
Wide availability
The new model will also power image results in Google Search through Google Lens and AI Mode. It will be available across 141 countries on the Google app and web.
For developers, Nano Banana 2 will be accessible in preview via the Gemini API, Gemini CLI, and Vertex API. It will also be available through AI Studio and Antigravity, Google’s development tool launched last November.
Image verification and transparency
All images generated using Nano Banana 2 will include a SynthID watermark to indicate AI-generated content. The images will also be compatible with C2PA Content Credentials, developed by an industry body that includes Adobe, Microsoft, Google, OpenAI, and Meta.
Since the launch of SynthID verification in the Gemini app in November last year, it has been used over 20 million times.
