Tech Mahindra unveils Hindi-first AI model to transform education

A new step in India’s AI journey took shape as Tech Mahindra introduced a Hindi-first large language model designed to improve learning outcomes, with a strong focus on education and STEM subjects.

The company announced the launch at the AI Impact Summit in Delhi. Developed under Project Indus and supported by the IndiaAI Mission, the model features 8 billion parameters. It is built to support learning in Hindi and 37 regional dialects, aiming to deliver more personalised and effective education experiences.

To address limitations in existing datasets, the model was trained on 500 million synthetic tokens. It uses tools from NVIDIA, specifically the NeMo platform, to improve language understanding and response accuracy.

The approach helps the model handle India’s linguistic and cultural diversity, ensuring students receive clear and context-aware explanations. This is particularly useful for complex subjects such as physics and other STEM areas.
The launch was announced on February 20, 2026.

While other organisations are pursuing broader or larger AI systems, Tech Mahindra is focusing on accessibility through language-specific learning. Companies like Fractal Analytics and institutions such as IIT Bombay are working on larger or more general models. In contrast, Tech Mahindra’s approach centres on making education more inclusive for students who prefer studying in Hindi or their native dialects.

The company believes this targeted strategy can make learning more engaging and relatable, especially for students who struggle with English-first educational tools. By combining AI with local language support, the model aims to simplify learning and improve comprehension across diverse student groups.
