Apple tests AI playlist creation feature in iOS 26.4 developer beta

Apple is continuing to expand its artificial intelligence capabilities with new music discovery tools aimed at improving user experience. With the rollout of iOS 26.4 beta 1 to developers on Monday, the company introduced an AI-powered addition to Apple Music designed to simplify playlist creation and personalise listening.

The update brings a new feature called Playlist Playground, powered by Apple Intelligence, which allows users to generate playlists using simple text prompts. The tool helps users discover music based on moods, genres, or specific themes. The feature is currently available only in the developer beta, while a public beta is expected soon.

Playlist Playground enables users to create playlists directly from the Library section by selecting the option to create a new playlist. After typing a short description, the app automatically suggests songs that match the request. Apple also includes preset prompt ideas for users who prefer guided suggestions.

Screenshots shared by X user Max Weinbach (@mweinbach) show the feature in action, along with a disclaimer stating, “Playlist Playground may create unexpected results.”

Once a playlist is generated, users can refine it further through follow-up prompts without restarting the process. Tracks can be added or removed manually, song order can be adjusted, and playlists can be customised before saving. The feature is also expected to automatically assign a title and generate around 25 song recommendations based on the prompt.

Playlist Playground forms part of Apple’s broader Apple Intelligence rollout within iOS 26.4. However, the feature may not appear immediately after installing the beta, as required AI models may still be downloading in the background. Users may need to wait for completion or check Apple Intelligence and Siri settings to enable it.

The iOS 26.4 beta 1 update also introduces small interface refinements in Apple Music, including artwork-based dynamic backgrounds and a possible concert discovery option for nearby live events. The wider release of the update is expected later this year.
