Acting on a specific intelligence input, police have arrested a 32-year-old man accused of running a cyberfraud operation by purchasing mule bank accounts and enabling illegal financial transactions, officials said on Sunday.
The accused, identified as Sandeep Kumar Gupta, a resident of Manglapur Gudaria ward no. 5 under Nauthan police station, was arrested on Saturday after a raid at his shop in Manglapur Bazar. During the search, police seized 28 ATM cards, 10 SIM cards, 5 bank passbooks, 4 cheque books and 8 mobile phones from his possession.
Superintendent of Police Shaurya Suman said the Bettiah cyber police station received a tip-off that Gupta was arranging bank accounts and SIM cards to route money obtained through cyber fraud activities. Following the information, a special team led by the DSP (cybercrime), along with Nauthan police, conducted a search operation at the location.
According to the police, preliminary investigation revealed that the accused allegedly bought bank accounts and SIM cards for Rs4,000 to Rs5,000. Fraudulent funds were routed through these mule accounts, from which Gupta reportedly kept a commission of 7–8% before transferring the remaining amount to other accounts using ATM cash deposit machines.
Officials said transactions worth several lakh rupees have been traced through the suspected accounts, which are also linked to multiple cybercrime complaints. A case has been registered under relevant legal sections, and the accused has been sent to judicial custody.
Cyber police teams are now investigating the wider network connected to the racket and are working to identify and arrest other individuals involved.
