In a move aimed at simplifying how users consume long documents, Google has introduced a new audio summaries feature in Google Docs, powered by Gemini AI. The update allows users to listen to short spoken overviews instead of reading entire files, making quick reviews easier and more efficient.
The new option can be accessed directly within Docs by navigating to Tools > Audio. Once enabled, the feature generates a brief audio recap, usually lasting under a few minutes, and delivers it in a natural-sounding voice.
Unlike basic text-to-speech tools, the audio summaries offer greater control and customisation. Users can choose from different voice styles such as narrator, persuader, or coach. Playback tools include a timeline scrubber, skip controls, and speed adjustments ranging from 0.5x to 2x. These features allow users to tailor the listening experience based on their preference or time constraints.
At present, the feature is being rolled out to select paid subscribers. Eligible users include those on Business Standard and Plus plans, Enterprise plans, Google AI Ultra for Business add-on, Google AI Pro for Education add-on, as well as Google AI Pro and Ultra memberships. Users on these plans can start exploring the feature as it becomes available to their accounts.
Google has positioned audio summaries in Docs as a tool for quick and focused reviews. This approach differs from audio features available in Google Drive, where podcast-style readings of PDFs can take anywhere between 2–10 minutes. While Drive’s audio feature uses the same core technology as Audio Overviews in NotebookLM, the Docs version relies specifically on Gemini AI to deliver concise summaries.
The update highlights Google’s continued push to embed AI-driven productivity tools across its workspace apps, helping users save time while staying informed.
