In a move that signals a wider European ambition, a French AI company Mistral AI is stepping beyond its home market to build large-scale data infrastructure in Sweden. The project marks the company’s first major expansion outside France and reflects a push to strengthen Europe’s control over its digital future.
Mistral AI has partnered with EcoDataCenter to invest $1.4 billion in new data centres in Sweden. The facilities are expected to become operational by 2027. The initiative is aimed at reducing Europe’s dependence on American technology companies, which currently manage a large share of the region’s digital services.
Mistral AI described the development as a “major step toward Europe’s technological independence.” Sweden was chosen due to its access to renewable hydroelectric power and its naturally cold climate. These factors help lower energy consumption, reduce emissions, and support the intensive computing needs required to run advanced AI models. The setup is also intended to limit reliance on US-based companies such as OpenAI.
By locating these data centres in Sweden, Mistral AI plans to improve data control within Europe. The company said it will manage customer workloads during the day and use nighttime hours to train AI systems. This approach is designed to maximise efficiency while keeping sensitive data within European borders.
The expansion follows strong financial momentum for the company. Mistral AI raised €1.7 billion in September, highlighting growing investor confidence. The company expects an annualised revenue run rate of $400 million and projects €2 billion in revenue over the next 5 years.
This investment underlines the company’s intention to play a central role in reshaping the European AI and technology landscape, with a focus on sustainability, data sovereignty, and long-term independence.
