Truecaller report flags sharp rise in AI-powered voice scams

A growing wave of advanced digital fraud is targeting Indian users, with scammers increasingly using AI-generated voices to trick people into sharing personal information, according to Truecaller’s 2025 report.

The report shows that out of 320 million users in India, Truecaller flagged 4,168 crore spam calls and nearly 13,000 crore spam messages. Many of these scam attempts posed as banks or government officials, making them harder for users to identify.

On average, users in India receive 13 scam messages every day across SMS, WhatsApp, email, and QR codes. This results in more than 100 hours each year spent by individuals checking whether messages and calls are genuine.

Telecom companies, along with AI-powered tools, are responding by blocking millions of suspicious calls on a daily basis. These measures aim to reduce the impact of increasingly sophisticated scam techniques on consumers.

To strengthen user safety, Truecaller has also introduced a new Family Protection feature. The feature allows users to create a family group of up to 5 members within the app. The group administrator receives a notification if any member gets a suspected scam call. The administrator can also share blocklists and step in to manage protection on Android devices.

The findings highlight how scam methods in India are evolving with technology, while telecom operators and digital platforms continue to scale countermeasures to protect users.
