Shine 2.0 portable wind turbine offers a compact alternative to solar power

For those living off grid, mobile power is essential. While solar panels remain a popular choice, a new portable wind turbine is emerging as a strong alternative. Developed by Aurea Technologies in Nova Scotia, Canada, Shine 2.0 is a compact wind-powered generator designed to deliver reliable energy in varying weather conditions, day or night.

Unlike solar panels that lose efficiency on cloudy or rainy days and stop working at night, Shine 2.0 produces power as long as wind speeds range between 8mph and 28mph. It even includes a built-in battery, making it both a turbine and a power bank.

Weighing 3 pounds and measuring 13.75 by 4 inches when folded, Shine 2.0 is about the size of a water bottle. It combines a wind turbine, charge controller, and 12,000mAh Li-ion battery into one device. Setup takes under 5 minutes. Users assemble the mount, unfold the blades, and position it into the wind. The turbine automatically aligns with wind direction. To stop it, simply turn it at a right angle to the wind.

The device is rated at 50W and delivers up to 75W through its USB-C Power Delivery port. It supports USB-C devices such as phones, lights, and cameras, and also works with 12V devices like laptops, drones, and portable power stations using a custom adapter with XT60 or 8mm DC barrel connectors.

In real-world conditions, Shine 2.0 generates about 13W at 18mph winds and reaches 50W at 28mph. A phone can fully charge in just over 1 hour at 18mph and around 17 minutes at peak wind speeds. Charging a laptop takes over 7 hours at 18mph and nearly 2 hours at 28mph. Operating noise peaks at 50dB.

The turbine connects to a smartphone app via Bluetooth for live monitoring of wind power and battery status. Built with aircraft-grade aluminum and rated IP54, it resists dust and water splashes. It is expected to operate for over 1,000 hours or about 5 years. Shine 2.0 is currently available for pre-order on Indiegogo, with shipments planned from April 2026.

In a separate development, Konkola Copper Mines plc has appointed Prakash Gopakumar as Chief Commercial Officer. He will lead procurement, supply chain, logistics, sales and marketing, and commercial governance. Previously, he served as CCO at Vedanta Limited – Aluminium Business and held leadership roles across mining and metals operations in India and Zambia.
