Expanding access to specialised engineering education, IIT Madras has introduced an online Bachelor of Science programme in Aeronautics and Space Technology.
The new programme will commence on February 9, 2026, and is aimed at students looking to enter the aerospace sector. The course will be delivered mainly online, although some in-person components such as examinations or lab-related visits may be required. It is open to candidates who have passed Class 12 or an equivalent examination, including diploma holders.
Teaching will be conducted largely through recorded lectures, live tutorial sessions, and online discussion forums for doubt resolution. While several assessments will be held through online proctored exams, some examinations will need to be taken at designated centres. The programme does not specify any mandatory on-campus laboratory visits.
The curriculum focuses on practical and industry-relevant learning. Students will work on real-world projects related to aircraft and spacecraft design, computational fluid dynamics, and internships that offer hands-on exposure to the aerospace domain.
On completion of the programme, graduates can explore career opportunities with public sector undertakings, private aerospace companies, start-ups, and engineering analysis firms. The degree also provides a pathway for students planning to appear for GATE or pursue higher studies at leading institutes such as IITs and IISc.
High-performing students will have the opportunity to transition into on-campus programmes at IIT Madras, offering an added advantage to those seeking advanced academic exposure.
The launch of this programme reflects IIT Madras’s effort to combine flexible learning with specialised technical education in emerging sectors.
