AI could disrupt nearly 50% of entry-level white-collar jobs in 5 years, says Anthropic CEO

As artificial intelligence advances at a faster pace than expected, concerns over its impact on jobs are growing. Dario Amodei, CEO of Anthropic, has warned that close to half of entry-level white-collar roles could face disruption within the next 5 years.

In his essay titled “The Adolescence of Technology,” Amodei said AI systems are becoming smarter at an unprecedented speed and are beginning to match human capabilities across a wide range of cognitive tasks. These include areas such as coding, analysis, and other forms of knowledge-based work.

Amodei highlighted how quickly AI capabilities have evolved. He noted that in just 2 years, AI has moved from writing basic code to managing full-scale projects, driven by rapid improvements in underlying models. This pace of development, he said, has taken many by surprise.

Some analysts have linked this rapid progress to job losses, although estimates on the scale of impact differ. Amodei cautioned that while certain roles may disappear, AI may not generate equivalent new job opportunities at the same pace. However, views remain divided on how quickly and how deeply these changes will unfold across the workforce.

The warning adds to the broader debate around the future of work and the need for societies to prepare for AI-driven disruption. Amodei has been vocal about the importance of recognising both the speed and scale of AI growth, as well as the responsibility that comes with it.
