Amid rising digital fraud, WhatsApp’s recently launched screen-sharing feature is being misused by scammers to steal sensitive information and money from users. The issue has been reported across multiple countries, including India, Hong Kong, Brazil, and the UK, highlighting the global scale of the threat.
The scam typically begins with a call on WhatsApp from fraudsters posing as bank officials. Victims are warned about an alleged urgent issue with their account and are pressured into acting quickly. Scammers then ask users to share their screen or install remote access applications such as AnyDesk or TeamViewer.
Once screen access is granted, fraudsters can view banking details, passwords, and one-time passwords in real time. In some cases, victims are also manipulated into transferring money or unknowingly installing malware on their devices.
The financial impact of such scams can be severe. In one reported case from Hong Kong, a victim lost $700,000 after sharing their screen with scammers. The incident serves as a stark reminder of how quickly and aggressively these frauds can unfold.
Meta, the parent company of WhatsApp, said it has taken steps to address the issue. The company stated that it has blocked 8 million scam accounts and removed more than 21,000 fake pages in recent action. Despite these efforts, cybercrime complaints in India have continued to rise in recent months.
Security experts and authorities are urging users to remain cautious. Users are advised to never share their screen, OTPs, or passwords with unknown callers, even if they claim to be from a bank or official institution. Any such requests should always be verified through official customer care channels before taking action.
As scammers continue to adapt to new features and technologies, users are being reminded that vigilance remains the strongest defence against digital fraud.
