New passport rules for 2026 set February 15 compliance deadline

With a focus on faster processing and stronger safeguards, the Government of India has announced a revised set of passport rules that will apply nationwide from February 15, 2026.

Government of India said the updated framework is designed to simplify the passport application and renewal process, enhance security, and reduce delays. Applicants have been advised to review the new requirements early to avoid last-minute rejections or processing issues once the rules take effect.

Under the revised norms, the list of acceptable documents has been streamlined and digitised. Priority has been given to Aadhaar and other government-issued identity proofs, cutting down paperwork and reducing the need for multiple certificates or repeated visits to passport offices. Officials have cautioned that applications with incomplete or incorrect documents may be rejected, highlighting the importance of accurate online submissions.

A key change is the revamp of the police verification process. Earlier known as one of the slowest stages, verification will now rely largely on digital systems. In many cases, checks are expected to be completed within days instead of weeks. The new process also allows post-issue verification in certain situations, where passports can be dispatched first and verified later.

The application journey has also been made more user-friendly. The passport portal has been upgraded to support online form filling, document uploads, and appointment bookings without intermediaries. Real-time notifications and tracking features will allow applicants to monitor progress more easily.

For minors, the rules have been clarified to ensure smoother processing. Digital birth certificates, school identity cards, and parental consent will be accepted more efficiently, helping reduce turnaround time for children’s passports.

The government has also announced plans to expand the number of passport service centres across the country. This move aims to improve access in smaller towns and rural areas, easing pressure on existing facilities.

Overall, the 2026 passport rules seek to balance speed, security, and convenience, offering applicants a smoother experience from submission to issuance. Prospective applicants are encouraged to complete all preparations well before the February 15 deadline to ensure full compliance with the new norms.
