Gurugram DLSA sets up cyber safety help desk to promote secure digital habits

At a time when online risks are becoming part of everyday life, the District Legal Services Authority (DLSA), Gurugram has launched a dedicated cyber safety help desk to guide citizens on safe and responsible use of digital platforms. The initiative is part of a wider awareness drive titled “Managing the Digital World – Think Before You Share.”

The move reflects growing concern over the spread of cyber fraud, online scams, misinformation and misuse of personal data. Officials said the help desk is designed to offer practical support and legal awareness to people navigating India’s fast-expanding digital ecosystem.

The cyber safety desk will function as a single point of assistance for individuals seeking guidance on online security and cybercrime prevention. It will help citizens understand how to protect themselves from cyber fraud and scams, identify and counter fake news, use social media responsibly, and safeguard personal data and privacy. The desk will also provide information on accessing free legal aid and counselling services for victims of scams.

Visitors will be guided on verifying digital information before sharing it, reporting cybercrime complaints through the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal, and approaching the right authorities when faced with suspicious or harmful online activity.

Officials said special attention will be given to groups that are more vulnerable to digital threats, including children, youth, parents, senior citizens and other at-risk sections of society. The aim is to encourage mindful online behaviour and improve overall digital well-being by helping people make informed choices in the virtual space.

As part of the awareness message, Rakesh Kadian, CJM-cum-Secretary of the DLSA, urged residents to “pause, verify, report and be responsible in the digital world.” The message underlines the importance of thinking critically before responding to online requests or sharing content.

The initiative aligns with national efforts to strengthen cyber awareness and connect citizens with official support systems such as the 1930 national cybercrime helpline and the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal.

With digital usage rising rapidly across India, cyber threats like phishing, smishing and other online frauds have become more frequent and convincing. Authorities believe that community-level initiatives like this help desk can play a key role in reducing risks, improving reporting, and empowering citizens with basic legal and digital knowledge.
