AMD hints next Xbox timeline as 2027 target remains in sight

Advanced Micro Devices has indicated that the next-generation Xbox console is still on course for a 2027 launch. During its latest quarterly earnings call, the chipmaker said development of the custom chipset for Microsoft’s upcoming console was “progressing well” and aligned with a planned 2027 release.

Early reports and leaks had already pointed to the next Xbox arriving in 2027, alongside Sony’s PlayStation 6. The upcoming Xbox is widely believed to be a PC and console hybrid running Windows. However, later reports suggested that rising hardware costs could delay the launch of the next console generation.

Despite these concerns, AMD CEO Lisa Su reaffirmed the timeline in her prepared remarks during the company’s Q4 FY 2025 earnings call. Speaking about upcoming products, she said, “From a product standpoint, Valve is on track to begin shipping its AMD-powered Steam Machine early this year, and development of Microsoft’s next-gen Xbox, featuring an AMD semi-custom SoC, is progressing well to support a launch in 2027.”

AMD is developing custom chips for Valve’s Steam Machine, the next-generation Xbox, and the PS6. Valve has confirmed that its Steam Machine, a PC and console hybrid running SteamOS, will launch in early 2026, though a specific date has not been announced. Microsoft and Sony have not yet officially confirmed timelines for their next consoles.

Leaks over the past year have repeatedly pointed to a 2027 launch window. In October, known hardware leaker KeplerL2 claimed the PS6 was planned for 2027, “unless any unexpected delays happen”. Around the same time, a popular hardware-focused YouTube channel reported that the next Xbox, internally referred to as “Xbox Magnus”, was also targeting 2027.

More recently, analysts have warned that rising RAM prices could push both consoles beyond their expected schedules. A December report suggested cost pressures may force delays, while an industry analyst last month said there was a “high likelihood” the PS6 could launch after 2028, as Sony looks to extend the PS5 life cycle.

The PS5 and Xbox Series S/X launched in late 2020. While both companies have confirmed work on future consoles, official details and timelines remain limited.
