A quieter update inside Google Maps could soon change how users correct place details, making the process faster and more natural through artificial intelligence.
Google Maps is reportedly working on a new AI-driven feature that could make editing listings easier for users. The company is said to be upgrading the “Suggest an edit” tool by integrating it with Gemini, its AI model. This change could introduce a conversational interface that allows users to correct or update information about places and shops using natural language. Recently, Google Maps also added Gemini-powered voice assistance for walking and cycling navigation.
According to a report by a publication, the new feature was spotted during an APK teardown of the Google Maps app version 26.05.04.860829830. At present, the feature is not available to users.
The “Suggest an edit” option on Google Maps allows users to update details such as opening hours, name changes, or unexpected closures. Google relies heavily on crowdsourced updates to keep listings accurate. However, the current editing process requires users to move through multiple screens and manually enter details, which increases the risk of errors or typos.
To address this, Google is reportedly testing a Gemini-powered chatbot interface within the edit tool. Screenshots shared in the report suggest that users may soon be able to simply type what they want to change, much like chatting with an AI assistant. Gemini would then understand the context and intent behind the message and apply it to the relevant listing fields.
Despite the new interface, the approval process is expected to remain the same. Once an edit is submitted, it will still be reviewed by Google’s team, and changes will only go live after verification.
It is important to note that this feature was found hidden within the app’s code and is not publicly visible. This means the final version could look very different, or the project may not be released at all. Until Google makes an official announcement, the information should be viewed with caution.
