Google Maps extends Gemini navigation support to walking and cycling

In a move aimed at making everyday navigation more intuitive, the technology company has expanded conversational AI support within Google Maps to cover more ways of getting around.

The company announced on Thursday that Gemini in navigation will now support walking and cycling modes. Until now, the AI assistant was limited to four-wheeler and two-wheeler navigation. With this update, pedestrians and cyclists can receive hands-free guidance during their journey and complete select tasks, such as sending messages, without stopping. This enhancement builds on the initial rollout of Gemini in Google Maps in November.

Gemini now active across more routes

In a blog post, the company detailed how the expanded support will work. Users on Android and iOS worldwide can now access Gemini while using walking or cycling navigation in Google Maps.

To use the feature, users need to open Maps, set a destination, start navigation in a supported mode, and tap the microphone icon at the top of the screen. Gemini can also be activated using the “Hey Google” voice command. At present, Gemini in Maps works only through voice. Users cannot type questions or view text-based responses.

What users can ask Gemini

While walking, users can ask questions like, “What neighbourhood am I in?” or “What are the top-rated restaurants nearby?” Gemini will respond with spoken answers and display recommendations on the screen using visual cues. During cycling, users can ask about their expected time of arrival.

Gemini can also handle requests beyond navigation. Users can ask, “When’s my next meeting?” or say, “Text Richa, I’ll come home in 30 minutes,” and the assistant will complete these tasks without manual input.

Built on earlier capabilities

When Gemini in navigation was first introduced in November, the company said the feature supports follow-up questions. Users can also ask about local places along their route, locate EV charging stations, and share their expected time of arrival with friends.

With the addition of walking and cycling modes, Gemini in Google Maps is moving closer to becoming a full-time, hands-free travel companion across different types of journeys.
