OpenAI launches Prism, an AI workspace built for scientists

OpenAI has introduced Prism, a free AI-powered platform designed to help scientists write papers, manage citations, and collaborate in real time. Built on GPT-5.2 and LaTeX, Prism is now available at prism.openai.com.

Prism is positioned as more than a standard writing assistant. The platform allows users to convert whiteboard sketches directly into LaTeX code, edit documents using voice commands, and explore ideas or test hypotheses with full awareness of the entire document. By using GPT-5.2, Prism supports deeper reasoning across complex scientific content rather than isolated prompts.

The tool also enables researchers to search arXiv for relevant papers, revise drafts efficiently, and handle equations and figures with ease. Collaboration is a key focus, as users can invite unlimited collaborators to work on the same document in real time.

OpenAI said Prism is completely free for anyone with a ChatGPT personal account. There are no limits on projects or the number of collaborators. The company also confirmed that more advanced features will be introduced later for paid ChatGPT plans and for organisations such as educational institutions and enterprises.

Prism is designed to address long-standing challenges in research workflows. Instead of switching between multiple tools or relying on general-purpose AI chats, researchers can now use a single platform where AI is embedded directly into the scientific writing process. The aim is to reduce friction in complex research tasks and speed up discovery.

OpenAI believes Prism could have a similar impact on research as AI-powered tools recently had on software development. By streamlining writing, collaboration, and idea exploration, the platform seeks to make hard-science workflows faster, more connected, and more efficient.
